6.0 – Mick Hanson

Year: 2235

It was getting dark as Mick joined the others in the Lion Group HQ. Everyone was gearing-up in their all-black uniforms, usually reserved for undercover operations, which he supposed this was going to be. The GC called over to Mick telling him to get ready for the full mission briefing in 10 minutes.

As they got ready the squad sat down one by one in a circle of chairs. GC Richards came into the circle and gave them an introduction to the briefing, mission and those involved. The mission had been in the planning stages for a long time. A strictly need-to-know classification had been used with only the men inside the room, aside from Mick, having any involvement. No external consultation had been allowed. Clearly the mission was high-stakes.

As Richards finished his initial introductions a hologram beamed from a mount in the ceiling, its colourful hue casting light over the GC. It showed lots of mission details, maps, buildings, personnel and vehicles. The GC stepped to one side so as not to block the view and began going into fine detail about the mission.

The target was to be a small microchip situated in a Griffin Technologies research lab in the company’s main complex at Canary Wharf. This was a specific contract with a client already in place. Although no details were given as to who the client was Mick assumed it was a foreign government. Griffin Technologies had been the target of espionage and heists for decades due to their world-leading technology and innovation. The GC made sure to tell the men in the room that if they pulled this job off, they would never need to work again. He also mentioned in the event of something going wrong there was no going back.

Mick’s role was to be their tech expert. His ability to bypass security systems and hack networks was the best in Lion Group making him a vital asset and why the GC kept him around.

Griffin technologies owned the entire Isle of Dogs. Travel by land would be next to impossible due to security checkpoints. As a result, they would all travel by boat east along the river accessing the complex via tunnels that fed excess water into the Thames. On the south point of the Isle of Dogs Richards and Mick would access their tunnel and make towards the automated security building. Mick would break into the network and gain control of the cameras and other systems.

While Mick and Richards dealt with security the other four men would continue travelling along the river and access another tunnel on the east side securing it as their getaway. They would then travel through the tunnel underneath the complex and begin setting up the laser drill that would cut through into the basement of the facility.

All of this had to be perfectly timed as the tunnels would flood with water every so often. However, they held a regular timetable and the team had been doing reconnaissance to map what it was. Every day was different on a fortnightly loop, but there was a pattern that could be exploited.

Once inside the building they would make their way up to floor twenty-five where the chip was kept. Mick would need to sweep for security regularly and use his knowledge to get them through locked doors. He now knew the purpose of the files the GC had told him to study weeks before.
